Our Scary Story
Welcome to Scarily Ordinary!
I landed on the name Scarily Ordinary because for years, I rarely tried to create spooky looks or costumes or projects because they turned out very elementary, and I saw how incredible the work of others was and thought, 'Why bother? Anything I make will look woeful next to their splendor." Although, I stopped creating, I didn't cease consuming their incredible DIY content.
Eventually, I moved to a city where practically everyone dressed up in costumes for events that varied from extremely elaborate to subtle, and I was heading out for Halloween. I felt like this was an opportunity to test out what I had learned since those early costumes in a "low-risk" environment because splendor wasn't expected: the only thing people celebrated was the effort and the spirit of the costume. I had been inspired by a Pinterest post by Lisamarie Murphy showing a mauled Little Red Riding Hood, so I got to work and sewed a very basic red velvet cape and played with some special effects makeup.
It wasn't perfect by a long-shot, but I had SO much fun during the process, and I was surprised at how many people enjoyed the costume. Many people asked me how I had created the look and said they wanted to try out special effects makeup too. I realized that not only did more people enjoy the effort much more than I expected, but the most important part of the creative process was having fun. After that, I wanted to keep creating new projects because the fun of it was in learning more and getting better. I embraced the idea that you don't have to be extraordinary to wait for your ideas to be perfect before you share them. There will always be people who have more talent and skill than you, but there's no need to deny yourself the fun of creating because you're not as good at it as they are.
It's okay to be Scarily, Ordinary.
I thought about all the people who had shared their talents and efforts regardless of perfection, about how much I learned from them, and how I wouldn't have pursued the joy of creation without their vulnerability. It made me want to share my projects with others in the hopes it would inspire others to do the same, regardless of where you're at in your creative journey.
Welcome to Scarily Ordinary, where all things spooky and DIY are celebrated, and mistakes are just a fun part of the learning process. I hope you enjoy it here!
